| ABSTRACT |
| This study aims to identify and describe hybridity, mimicry, and ambivalence in the novel Gadis Pantai by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using a library research method. The primary data source is the novel Gadis Pantai, while supporting data are obtained from books, journals, and relevant previous studies. The analysis focuses on the representation of the social structure of Javanese society in the early twentieth century, which is divided into several social strata, namely Europeans, Asians, and Indigenous people. The indigenous group is further divided into two social classes, namely the nobility or priyayi and the common people or kawula, reflecting social disparities between urban and rural communities. Under these conditions, coastal communities are portrayed as possessing strong cultural resilience and endurance. The harsh life of fishermen is accepted as part of their collective identity. The findings indicate that the novel reflects the complexity of colonial identity through practices of cultural hybridity, symbolic mimicry, and the ambivalent attitudes of its characters in a critical, contextual, and sustained manner within postcolonial studies of modern Indonesian literature. |
